1952 saw the first ever conference on Machine Translation, held at MIT. Within the decade, researchers confidently predicted the imminent arrival of a universal translation machine. Fast forwarding to the 21st Century, in a State of Union address, U.S. President Clinton was still promising that “soon, researchers will bring us devices that can translate foreign languages as fast as you can speak.”
